The LVRC Pain Recovery for Healthcare Professionals Program provides chronic pain and addiction treatment customized to the needs of each individual. Because of their training and education, healthcare professionals often develop similar coping styles and require specialized intervention and treatment methods. Our professionals track addresses chronic pain conditions with or without co-occurring addiction as they relate to the challenges faced by this particular group. We recognize the long-term use of opioids to manage chronic pain rarely improves and often further impairs an individual’s ability to function. Our innovative Pain Recovery Program was developed in 2005 and continues to be supervised by our award-winning Medical Director and author, Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM. Because chronic pain affects all aspects of a person’s life, this program is designed to treat the whole person—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, as well as physically. We utilize an opioid-free bio-psycho-social-spiritual model that incorporates a carefully selected combination of medical, clinical, family, physical, and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) services to provide comprehensive individualized treatment in a structured setting. The multidisciplinary team at LVRC works together to restore and maximize function, prevent needless disability, and help patients avoid surgery and unnecessary medical care.

Program Goals

Our aim is to treat the whole person, recognizing that pain and disability affect all aspects of a person’s life. The goals of our Pain Recovery for Healthcare Professionals Program are to restore functional capacity by increasing physical functioning, improving pain-coping skills, promoting the return to a productive lifestyle at home or at work, and limiting the need for future invasive and cost-intensive treatments. The goals of the LVRC program are:

  1. Eliminating the use of opioids, sedatives, and other habit-forming medications and reducing the need for medical services.
  2. Restoring functional capacity so healthcare professionals can return to work.
  3. Improving self-management of pain and related problems.
  4. Moving patients toward stability and maximum function.

We conduct assessments at the request of Professional Wellness Programs and state licensing authorities, and work closely with professional advocacy and monitoring organizations, collaborating with them to maximize successful outcomes for each patient.
