At Las Vegas Recovery, we believe that addiction is one disease with many manifestations. For families, this can be heartbreaking and often exhausting. Family members are torn between how to help and how to avoid being submerged in the chaos addiction creates. Suffering psychologically and physically, they are often coping day to day without certainty, support or direction. They may not even notice that they’re suffering, and the family unit as a whole has become dysfunctional. The LVRC Family Renewal program offers a solution. Our educational classes and peer support meetings provide a path to recovery and assist families in dealing with the situation and finding ways to cope.

Families Learn Their True Roles in Recovery

Because studies show that family involvement in treatment is critical for long-term, positive outcomes for their loved ones, we make sure the family’s overall emotional and psychological well-being is considered. At Las Vegas Recovery Center, we provide treatment for the whole family. Our interactive educational lectures encourage active participation from family members who need to express their questions and concerns. Families learn that it’s not all about their addicted loved one; it’s about the future health of the family as a whole. Through our four-day Family Renewal Program, family members develop healthier relationships, and they learn the nuances of treatment and recovery. We provide more than a generalized or scientific overview; we use experiential methods, such as video, Power Point presentations, and family alumni testimony to bring new information to life. Passionate and engaging presenters discuss their expertise within the addiction field as well. Participants learn the true role they play in the recovery of the one they love.

Support Continues for Families in Recovery

In addition to the Family Renewal Program, families are supported at the Las Vegas Recovery Center through two group meetings outside the program. The first group meeting is open to any family member who is dealing with an addicted loved one, whether the loved one is a client of Las Vegas Recovery Center or not. Facilitated by a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, the group includes family members in all stages of recovery—some who are there just to find out what to do next and others who have been in recovery for a while and can lend a supportive hand. Abundant resources are available at this general meeting, including information on recovery and sober living options, as well as twelve-step meetings for family members. The second meeting LVRC facilitates for families is open only to those who have gone through our four-day Family Renewal Program. With the focus being on reinforcing the tools and education provided during the program and the goal being managing boundaries and getting through the difficult stages of recovery. This group is also a way to build a recovery network. Many participants have been attending for several years and become friends and supportive buddies.

Family Renewal FAQ & Details

At Las Vegas Recovery Center we strive to educate the public about the importance of family recovery. We have formed many strategic partnerships with grief counselors, psychologists, family and marriage counselors, the public defender’s office, the department of public safety, schools, professors, social workers and more in order to make our effective program more accessible to those who might otherwise not be familiar with our program and its benefits. We offer a free family recovery support group that is open to any family member seeking recovery. The group provides identification, support, and solutions by a trained family recovery counselor. It currently meets every Friday at 6:00 p.m. at 3321 North Buffalo Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89129 in Suite 101. Because Las Vegas Recovery Center understands that the success of an addict’s long-term recovery is heavily influenced by their family’s involvement in their recovery, we wave the cost for the entire family program if a family member is a client in treatment at our inpatient facility, Las Vegas Recovery Center, for up to two (2) family participants. If there are more than two family members attending, the cost is $550.00 per additional person. The program is open to all families interested in attending. If they do not have a loved one attending one of Las Vegas Recovery Center’s inpatient programs, the cost for Family Renewal Program is $550.00 for up to two (2) family participants, and $550 for each additional member.

When Is The Next Family Renewal Program?

Basic Principles

At Las Vegas Recovery Center, our approach to family recovery is based on the four points of balance, as well as the following philosophies:

  1. Addiction and chronic pain are both diseases that affect the entire family. Most families seeking recovery express the feeling of powerlessness over their loved ones. With a little support, which our approach provides, families find they can take charge of the situation and find the solution. Our family recovery program is designed to guide family members on how to become emotionally, spiritually, and mentally stable, regardless of their loved one’s decisions (addict/client) during or after treatment. To assist family members in achieving this, we will support, educate, and assist family members in identifying healthy boundaries.
  2. Our experience with chronic pain and addiction clients gives us the best insight on what families need to recover.Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM, Claudia Black, PhD and Senior Clinical & Family Services Advisor, and consulting psychologist Dr. Hunter, PhD, with the assistance of a highly qualified and passionate staff, have collectively shaped our Family Renewal Program based on their combined 100 years of experience with families and addiction.Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM was trained in family practice and has worked in addiction for over 32 years. He is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), and a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He is a nationally known public speaker and co-author of Pain Recovery: How to Find Balance and Reduce Suffering from Chronic Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2009); Pain Recovery for Families: How to Find Balance When Someone Else’s Chronic Pain Becomes Your Problem Too (Central Recovery Press, 2010). Dr. Pohl is the author of A Day without Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2008), which won a silver medal from Independent Publisher Book Award in May 2009. He has recently written a revised version of A Day Without Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2011). Since the 1970’s Claudia’s work has encompassed the impact of addiction on young and adult children. She offers models of intervention and treatment related to family violence, multi-addictions, relapse, anger, depression and women’s issues. Her writings and teachings have become a standard in the field of addictions.
  3. Family renewal is about helping families focus on their future, not their past. Our specially designed Family Renewal Program helps family members start on their own journey of discovery and recovery. The intensive four-day workshop begins with a welcome session that highlights the topics to be covered. Each day educational lectures are presented by our team of addiction and chronic pain experts and are followed by process groups that allow family recovery members to discuss their personal concerns, as well as ask questions about the subjects presented without their loved one present. We believe client confrontation hinders the family’s ability to recover from existing wounds, often by opening new wounds. These educational lectures are interactive and family participation is strongly encouraged. Here attendees will find everything they need to know about codependency, addictive disorders, and chronic pain treatment and recovery. Ultimately, participants in our Family Renewal Program establish an understanding of why they are there to begin with and form a new focus on the future health of their family.
