This is an interesting perspective on opiates for chronic pain. One aspect of treating chronic pain with opiates that is not included in this article is the fact that a high percentage of patients who take high doses of opiates GET WORSE – more pain and decreased function – not better on these medications. I suggest as an alternative a methodology we refer to as Pain Recovery – opiate free, which involves learning to live with and not try to “kill” the pain with high doses of potentially habit forming medicines, which are replete with side effects. Inadvertently, these drugs rob some patients of their satisfaction with life, resulting in depression, despair and decreased function. To read the full article
