For many years, professionals in the field of addiction have argued for and against the integration of 12-step philosophy into treatment programs. Those who are reluctant cite the lack of scientific rigor around the effectiveness of 12 steps as well as the spiritual orientation of these programs and other reasons for keeping a formal treatment program separate from a 12-step approach to recovery. The Las Vegas Recovery Center will present the other side of the story through its Discover Recovery workshop Discovering the Steps: Guides to the 12 Steps for Individuals and Families, to be held Sept. 13, Oct. 4 and Nov. 8, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Las Vegas Recovery Center in Las Vegas.
The Benefits of Combining Treatment and the 12 Steps
Many addiction experts agree that there are benefits in combining treatment programs with 12-step philosophy. The main benefit is the known effectiveness of Alcoholics Anonymous. Founded in 1935, the program has helped millions of people achieve long-term recovery. Hundreds of other programs have been formed around the 12 steps, such as Narcotic Anonymous, Nar-Anon, Al-Anon and Overeaters Anonymous to name a few. Las Vegas Recovery Center recognizes that when recovering individuals participate in a 12-step program on a consistent basis in conjunction with treatment or relapse prevention programs, they have a much better chance at achieving long term abstinence and recovery. The LVRC workshop focuses on these benefits and shows how the 12 steps can be integrated into the most current and effective approaches to treatment. The workshop will clarify the recovery process not only for those who struggle with addiction and LVRC alumni, but also for families and loved ones who would like to understand how the 12 steps work.
