Opioid medications are the most commonly prescribed-and one of the most widely abused drugs in the United States. While they can provide pain relief, they often cause tolerance and physical dependence. Individuals will sometimes extend use to alleviate emotional pain, as well as physical pain. Unused medications improperly stored can be diverted by those looking for a “legal high”. And the sad truth is improper use of these medications can lead to death.
